Situated in the lap of mighty Kanchenjunga with Khecheopalri wish fulfilling lake in the north, Sangachoeling Monastry in the northwest, Pemayangtse Monastry in the north-east and Kirateshwar Mahadev Mandir in the south lies a beautiful village “Aarigaon, Yangthang” a place where Sikkim Government College Gyalshing is located. It is three kilometers away from the district headquarter Gyalshing with a sprawling campus of 26 acres located away from the din and tumult of city life offering a great ambience for studies.
The College is affiliated to Sikkim University, A Central University established by an Act of Parliament of India in 2007. Students are well-disciplined and the teaching fraternities are equally dedicated. Students give importance to certain objective values, norms and principles. Students are encouraged to be responsible, regular and punctual at work and are trained to develop capacity to think objectively and discuss freely. The strength of the College at present comprise of 40 teaching faculty, 19 non- teaching staff, 898 students and 13 Departments offering BA (Hons) Course. The teacher pupil ratio is very healthy which is 1:21 in ratio as a result of which individual attention is given to every student and the performance of the students can be tract easily over a period of time. The enrolment of the girls (518) which is more than that of the boys (380) and far above the national average is in sync with the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Damodar Modi’s vision and objective of “Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao”.
The policy of the state providing free and fair education is applicable to this institution since it is under the administrative control of the Govt. of Sikkim. Free education is provided to the poor local students and negligible amount of fees are charged for non-local candidates. The college consists of well qualified faculty members committed to curriculum development and innovation, involving themselves wholly in the process of institution building, besides initiating various extracurricular activities.
